I have been in the energy healing world for over four decades; a lot has changed(and a fair bit has not). I practice a distance healing called WebWork and have done a number of informal research studies with hundreds of participants, enough to know it’s effective.
Yet, some still consider it woo-woo. I would venture that, in time, energy healing will become part of our health and well-being protocol, and here’s why.

In academia, the human energy field is often referred to as the biofield. While ancient healing traditions have worked with this energy field for millennia, modern science is just beginning to explore its potential role in health, communication, and healing. The biofield is a complex field of energy and information that surrounds and permeates the human body.
This subtle energy field is believed to be vital to maintaining health and well-being. It is also a significant part of the body’s self-regulation processes, influencing physical, emotional, and energetic balance.
Though still in its early stages, research into the biofield is exploring fascinating questions about the relationship between consciousness, energy, cellular communication, and the physical body.
The inability to easily measure or quantify it has been a challenge in Western medicine, one that, with advances in technology, may soon be over.
The biofield is composed of energy centers or chakras, meridians, aka energy pathways, and the aura, a luminous body that surrounds and permeates the physical body.
Many of us can sense energy, our own and others. It’s hard to define and has been taught through shared experience.
The biofield reflects an individual’s emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Imbalances or disturbances lead to illness or dysfunction. A balanced and clear biofield is associated with flow, health, and vitality.
Our energy interacts with energy from other living beings and our environment. This affects energy balance and flow, highlighting the importance of the environment and relationships in our well-being.
Scientific exploration into the biofield and its implications for health and healing is in its infancy. Research in this area often intersects with studies on subtle energies, electromagnetic fields, and biophoton emissions. Here are some areas of scientific inquiry you might see related to the biofield:
1. Biophoton Emissions
- Scientists have detected weak light emissions (biophotons) from living organisms, including humans. This is thought to be part of the biofield. Biophotons are believed to be involved in cellular communication. Their exact role in health and disease is still not fully understood.
2. Electromagnetic Fields
- The heart and brain are known to generate electromagnetic fields, which can be measured with instruments like electrocardiograms (ECGs) and electroencephalograms (EEGs). It makes sense that these fields extend beyond the body and interact with the environment, as a component of the biofield.
3. Quantum Field Theory
- Some theoretical physicists and researchers are exploring health and consciousness through the lens of quantum field theory, suggesting that the biofield may be understood through quantum mechanics. Theories like wave-particle duality, quantum superposition, and quantum entanglement look at subatomic energy. Exploring how it moves and communicates.
4. Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV)
- Techniques like Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV), based on Kirlian photography, are claimed to visualize energy fields or auras surrounding the body. Proponents suggest GDV can be used to assess the state of an individual’s biofield and related health conditions, though skeptics question the validity and interpretation of these images.
5. Research on Healing Practices
- Studies on practices that manipulate the biofield, such as Reiki, Healing Touch, and Therapeutic Touch, have shown varied results. Some studies are reporting statistically significant positive effects on stress reduction, pain management, depression, and wound healing, suggesting an interaction with an energy field, though definitive mechanisms are still unknown.
6. Consciousness and Intention Studies
- Experiments exploring the effects of intention on living systems (e.g., directed intention affecting the growth rate of plants or the crystalline structure of water) indicate the existence of a transferable energy influenced by consciousness. However, these studies have not been widely reproduced.
As scientific tools evolve, the study of the biofield continues to gain traction, bridging the gap between ancient healing traditions and modern research. While there is a lot of ground to be covered to meet the knowledge present in wisdom practices, early findings suggest that energy fields play a role in well-being, cellular communication, and even consciousness itself.
Could the biofield provide deeper insights between science and spirituality while providing a boost for health and healing?
