It’s the prime time of summer, and if you believe what you see on social media, everyone is outside, living their best life without a care in the world. My life, while I love it, is more up/down/sideways than a steady stream of blissed-out perfection. My guess is you’re over there saying “same” 😃.
I was chatting with a colleague last week, and she asked me to look at her website. She is a healer practicing reiki and sound healing. What jumped out at me was all the energy-healing ‘jargon.’ Lots of attunement, energy work, or healing without describing what she meant by that.
Attunement generally refers to aligning or harmonizing one’s energy with a particular energy or frequency. It’s commonly used in various healing modalities, energy work, and spiritual practices to describe becoming receptive to or resonating with specific energies. The critical point here is understanding what the practitioner is attuning to. They should be able to explain that to you.
Energy work or energy medicine is a very broad term referring to holistic approaches that focus on the body’s subtle energy systems. It’s grounded in the understanding that the human body is not merely a mechanical/chemical state. The human biofield has an energetic aspect that influences well-being, health, and vitality.
The concept of energy work comes from various ancient healing traditions, including traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and indigenous healing practices. It is also informed by quantum physics. What we know scientifically is still in its infancy.
When energy flow is imbalanced or blocked, we experience physical, emotional, and /or spiritual effects. Energy work is focused on restoring dynamic equilibrium, clearing blockages, and promoting the free flow of energy throughout the body. Again any practitioner should be able to explain to you what modality they are using and how it influences the energy field.
Healing is a multi-faceted and personal experience, as it varies for each of us. At its core, healing is an inside job. We are innately able to heal. Sometimes we need some help initiating healing. There are many ways to initiate healing, such as medical treatments, energy work, counseling, self-care practices, and lifestyle changes.
Healing isn’t about removing symptoms or all problems but rather about finding that place in the dynamic equilibrium that you function best in. It’s about balance, resilience, and a sense of well-being. Healing is, by its very nature, a process of growth, transformation, and learning. Discussing your expectations and understanding of healing with your practitioner will help to guide where the process goes.
My friend is in the process of updating her website, and I am looking at some updates as well. I have these conversations with my clients on a regular basis, and it brought awareness to me that I do not do that as thoroughly as I could with my community.
