I’ve been working through some pain in my left heel. It’s making it hard to walk Jake on the beach which makes me a little cranky. I’ve tried a number of different energy healing techniques with short-term success but eventually, the pain keeps returning (it probably doesn’t help that I keep walking Jake on the beach).
I tend to be pretty healthy and can manage most things with one of my tools or processes but sometimes I need some help. I went to see my non-force chiropractor last week, she informed me it was likely referred pain from my low back as it was out of alignment. She did some adjustments. While the pain isn’t gone it is better and has a different quality and intensity, which I’m taking as a good sign.
This had me thinking about how we deal with illness, wellness, injuries, and healing.
Humans are amazing, resilient beings. We are designed to self-heal, physically, mentally, and spiritually. We’re hard-wired to seek dynamic equilibrium. In plain terms, we seek harmony. This doesn’t mean a steady state with no peaks or valleys but a range of well-being.
When we have psychological pain, we often create compensatory behaviors, stress eating, distancing ourselves from others, and over giving are some classic ones. We create these behaviors in order to feel better and insulate ourselves from unpleasant feelings, they may be maladaptive, but it ‘heals’ the immediate pain and brings us back to a sense of harmony.
Physically when we get a scrape, the body initiates a response to neutralize bacteria and repair the skin. Most of the time the area scabs over and heals in a few days. Harmony reinstated.
In research, there is a control for the placebo effect – a positive response to an inert substance. More on the placebo effect at a later date but long story short there is research showing it may actually be an activation of a centralized healing response.
As we rush through our lives, it can be easy to become out of touch with what our body, mind, and spirit need to function optimally. Learning to tune in to what you need helps to avert bigger problems and initiate the centralized healing response.
An easy way to incorporate this into your daily routine is each evening as you’re getting ready for bed scan your body from head to toe noticing the sensations that are present – any tension, discomfort, heaviness, ease. Then do the same with your emotions for the day by running a quick mind movie of the day noticing if you have any residual stress or emotion being stored in your body.
As for my foot, it’s on the mend – not fully healed but well on its way. Looking back, I can see where life got busy, stress increased, and I didn’t pay attention. It happens. I’m human. And I’m glad I have the awareness and tools I need to tune in and start the healing.
